Walmart Health to acquire multi-specialty telehealth provider MeMD

Walmart Health, the primary care unit of retailing giant Walmart, has agreed to acquire multi-specialty telehealth provider MeMD for an undisclosed price.

Founded by Dr. John Shufeldt in 2010, MeMD offers virtual care across the US.

By utilizing the latest online technologies, the telehealth provider caters to patients round the clock in a convenient and accessible manner. Currently, MeMD offers medical and mental health visits to millions of members in the US.

The acquisition will enable Walmart Health to offer access to virtual care, which includes urgent, behavioral, and primary care to complement its in-person centers.

Commenting on Walmart acquisition of MeMD, Dr. Cheryl Pegus – executive vice president, Health & Wellness at Walmart, said: “Telehealth offers a great opportunity to expand access and reach consumers where they are and complements our brick-and-mortar Walmart Health locations. Today people expect omnichannel access to care, and adding telehealth to our Walmart Health care strategies allows us to provide in-person and digital care across our multiple assets and solutions.

The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, is likely to be completed in the coming months.
