Mayan Train project : ACCIONA, Grupo Mexico win contract for Section 5

ACCIONA and its partner Grupo México have won a contract worth MX$17.8 billion (€713 million) for the construction of Section 5 of the Mayan Train project in Mexico from Fondo Nacional de Fomento de Turismo (Fonatur).

The work for Section 5 involves the construction of electrified double rail tracks, that are 60.3km in length.

Section 5 will be laid between Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo state and Tulum in the Quintana Roo state.

As part of the contract, ACCIONA and Grupo México will construct a 7km long railway viaduct in Playa del Carmen and various wildlife crossings along the overall route.

According to ACCIONA, the convoys can hit maximum speeds of 160km per hour on Section 5.

The construction phase, which can take up to 31 months, is expected to create over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Upon its completion, the consortium will handle the maintenance of the infrastructure for 51 months.

Overall, the Mayan Train project is a 1,525km long intercity railway infrastructure project that will cover five southeastern states in Mexico.
