What is meant by Amenorrhoea? Which age group is included in Amenorrhoea condition?
Amenorrhoea means absence of menstrual periods in women of reproductive age. Literally it includes the state of girls before puberty and women after their menopause. It is more sensibly confined to the women of child bearing age who do not menstruate.
Types of Amenorrhoea
Amenorrhoea is of two types namely:
- Primary Amenorrhoea
- Secondary Amenrrhoea
Primary amenorrhoea means that menstruation has never occurred or started. In some cases menstruation may start late which may not be a problem but in some cases it may be the result of some defect in the structure or hormonal imbalance, which require immediate attention. Any case needs full investigation to know about the details and root causes of amenorrhoea.
Secondary amenorrhoea means the women may had periods previously but stopped now. The reasons may be due to pregnancy or early unexpected menopause. In some cases it may be the symptom of all kinds of illness including emotional aspects.
Amenorrhoea is not at all an illness. It is only a symptom and it is harmful in itself only due to the feeling that she is not behaving normally disturbs the patient.
Menses usually begin at the age of 12-15 years depending on the climatic and genetic conditions and ceases at the age of 40-45 years.
